Reelect Michael Reyes for Reynolds School District Board, Position 3

Michael Reyes for Reynolds School District Board, Position 3

Michael Reyes is the current Reynolds School Board Chair. His work these past four years has helped elevate Reynolds’ student outcomes across the district, strengthened relationships with educators, and led the district through some of its biggest challenges in recent years. His commitment to serve Reynolds comes from his passion as a life-long educational advocate and as a parent of a Reynolds student. Michael knows when our community works together every student can succeed.

Meet Michael

Michael was raised in a military family and moved around a lot during his childhood, but he’s called East Multnomah County home for nearly 18 years. Michael began his career coordinating after school youth programs. This work led him to several years in college admissions and higher education. In the early 2010s, Michael transitioned to philanthropy, where he awarded foundation grants to community-based organizations working for policy change for Oregon’s schools. He then worked at the Oregon Department of Education implementing some of the same policies he helped support. Michael currently works for Oregon’s largest private foundation funding educational programs and advocacy efforts statewide. Michael lives in Troutdale with his wife and two children. In his free time, he teaches martial arts classes at a local church and can be found going on neighborhood runs with his dog.

Issues

Student Achievement

Our most important priority is ensuring all Reynolds students succeed academically. We have made gains these past four years in reading and math scores, and we must stay the course to meet our board goals. This means investing in curriculum, reducing class sizes, and building and maintaining existing community partnerships.

Collaboration

By working collaboratively on our shared goals, we can all deliver the highest quality education for our students. This means working together with our teacher and staff unions, our administrators, and our youth leaders.

Fighting for Funding

Oregon schools continue to be underfunded. I believe it is critical that we leverage our collective voices to demand the state adequately fund our schools. We also need to invest locally in upgrading our school facilities to ensure our students have the best learning environment.
